Pros and Cons of Resolution Tiers
720p
- Pros: fine for casual calls, usually cheap, less bandwidth
- Cons: soft image, poor low-light handling, looks dated on any screen larger than a laptop
1080p
- Pros: the sweet spot, clear and sharp, handles compression well, works in reasonable low light
- Cons: you lose some detail if you crop in, and some budget 1080p sensors are worse than good 720p ones
4K
- Pros: great for recording, useful if you crop in post, future-proofing
- Cons: completely wasted on video calls, bigger files, often paired with mediocre sensors that upscale from 1080p anyway
How I Tested
My shop is a converted garage with terrible overhead lighting. I've got a window that blasts sun in during the afternoon and a single LED panel I rigged up for streaming. I tested each camera for at least two weeks of daily calls, plugged into a desktop tower, a dying laptop, and a USB hub that my dog Gus has knocked over twice. I used them in Teams, Zoom, Meet, and OBS. I measured field of view by sitting at my normal 4 to 5 feet from the monitor and seeing how much of my face fit in frame.
Resolution vs. Reality: What Actually Matters
Here's what I learned after months of testing. The resolution is the sensor's native output, but your video call software compresses it, your screen displays it, and your internet connection throttles it. A 4K webcam sends a 4K signal to Zoom, Zoom compresses it to something closer to 1080p, and your colleague sees it on a 13-inch laptop screen. That's not a conspiracy. That's how the pipeline works.
The Brio 101 is 1080p and looks better on a call than the HUYEOOG 4K. Why? Because the Brio's sensor is better at handling light and color, and the image processing is smarter. The HUYEOOG's 4K sensor is average at best, and the marketing sticker doesn't change that.
What actually separates good from bad:
Low light performance. Every camera claims it works in low light. Most of them lie. The Brio 101 genuinely does, which is why I bought six for the office. The Shcngqio gets noisy and grainy when the sun goes down. That's a sensor quality issue, not a resolution issue.
Field of view. This determines usability more than resolution. The EMEET C960 has a wide FOV with no zoom. I sit 4 to 5 feet from my monitor, so I had to rig up an extension stick to bring it within 2 feet of me. That's a workaround, not a solution. The Brio 101 is slightly zoomed in, and I had to push my chair back to fit my face in frame. Both are 1080p. Both have the same resolution. Completely different experience.
Autofocus. The EMEET occasionally goes blurry for a second and then refocuses. It corrects itself quickly, but it's there. The Brio doesn't hunt. The Shcngqio doesn't either. This has nothing to do with resolution and everything to do with the lens and firmware.
720p: Good Enough for Granddad
I bought the Shcngqio 1080P for my grandfather. He's not tech-savvy at all. His laptop is so old the camera software no longer works. He plugged the Shcngqio in via USB and it just worked. Zero problems. That's the whole review right there.
At $20 to $30, this is the easiest recommendation I can make. The image quality exceeded my expectations. Clear and sharp, which surprised me for the price. The adjustable clip holds securely, and the privacy cover gives him peace of mind.
But here's the honest part. In my garage with the bad lighting, the Shcngqio gets noisy. It's not terrible, but you can see the sensor struggling. And the mic is usable but thin. If you're calling your grandkids on a Sunday, this is perfect. If you're recording a podcast, buy a real microphone.
The 720p tier is mostly dead now, and that's fine. Anything labeled 720p today is either ancient or a toy. The Shcngqio is 1080p and costs less than a pizza night. That's where the budget market has landed.
1080p: The Sweet Spot
The Logitech Brio 101 (B0CJ5KQN8B) is the one I recommend to everyone. I've bought six for my company, and they've been flawless on every PC we've plugged them into. Super easy to install. Pretty much plug and play. The image quality is fantastic, and it works nicely with minimal light.
Priced around $50 to $60, it does exactly what it says. At $50, if you use it for a year of daily calls, that's about 14 cents a day. Worth it.
The privacy shutter is a nice bonus, and the mount is sturdy. It works with Teams and Zoom without any driver nonsense. The only complaint I've seen is that it's zoomed in too much. One buyer had to push their chair back to fit their face in frame. I had the same issue in my setup. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's worth knowing before you buy.
Compared to the EMEET C960, the Brio is more expensive but better in low light and has a more useful FOV for most people. The EMEET is a great value at $40 to $50, and the quality is solid. But the wide angle with no zoom was a dealbreaker for me since I sit 4 to 5 feet back. If you sit closer to your monitor, the EMEET is a legitimate option.
The EMEET also has that occasional autofocus blur. Multiple buyers mention it. It doesn't happen often and it corrects itself quickly, but it's there. The Brio doesn't do that.
4K: The Marketing Trap
The HUYEOOG 4K is the most complicated relationship I've had with a webcam. Priced around $60 to $80, it sits above the Brio in price and promises more resolution. It doesn't deliver.
The built-in three-color fill light is a genuinely nice feature for lighting up calls without needing extra gear. That's a real plus, and it's the main reason to consider this camera. But getting it recognized and working took a bit of troubleshooting upfront. That's an instant demerit in my book. The best webcam is the one that works the moment you plug it in.
The included tripod is on the wonky side. It can't hold the camera straight, which is a pet peeve of mine. If you're going to include a tripod, make it not wonky.
And the 4K sensor? Pretty average overall. It does the job, but it doesn't justify the price premium over the Brio 101. On a video call, compressed to 1080p by Teams, you cannot tell the difference. I couldn't, and I look at this stuff all day.
The only reason to buy a 4K webcam is if you're recording video locally for editing, or if you need to crop into the frame during production. For video calls, it's wasted money.
Should You Buy Based on Resolution?
No. Buy based on the sensor quality, the field of view, and whether it works in your lighting. Resolution is one spec among many, and it's not the most important one.
If you want the safest bet at any price, get the Logitech Brio 101. It's plug-and-play, works in low light, and the image quality is solid. If you're on a tight budget, the Shcngqio gets it done for $20 to $30, with the caveat that low light isn't its strength. Skip the 4K tier unless you're recording locally, and be careful with wide-angle cameras like the EMEET if you sit far from your monitor.
I'm currently testing a few more budget cameras to see if the $20 tier is finally good enough to recommend without caveats. The Shcngqio is close, but the low-light performance still isn't there. I'll update this when I've got more data.
